Dinner tonight is at Gold Restaurant and we were told that we were in for an authentic African dining experience. Well let me tell you, they were right. Our experience included African face painting, a 14-dish safari of the palate and an evening of djembe drumming and African entertainment. https://goldrestaurant.co.za/
Musician playing as we walked in and were seating ourselves.
The beginning of our dinner experience and were we in for a treat.
We all have drums at our seats.
Annette is ready for the task at hand.
The Gold Restaurant setting.
Me, Brini and Annette.
Izzy and the Musicians.
Teresa and Brini got their faces' painted.
The beginning of our djembe drum instruction from Izzy.
I'm being a good listener and waiting for instructions.
So I'm having a good ole time trying to listen to directions, hold this doggone drum between my legs and do these beats on this drum. Maybe I should have waited on that first glass of wine. This was so much fun and we sounded good, too.
Back at it again.
For those watching this video, you will lose the picture after 33 seconds until the last six seconds due to a mishap at our table. So if you want a visual throughout the video this one is not for you. However, if you want to hear the music and the laughter this will be a great video to listen to. Though you can't see it, this performance was fantastic and had the audience totally engaged.
Short djembe drumming video.
Izzy calls Michael Baisden on stage and they do some djembe drumming together.
Do you want to hear how they sound? Here you go. Mike knows a little something something and does his thang.
The menu at the time of our visit.
A Mali Puppet.
Performance with the Mali Puppet. Inspired by the traditions of Malian performance a puppet and a Praise singer welcome you to the restaurant in an African song and dance. In the animistic Bamana tradition, puppets and masks are intermediaries between the human and spirit world. Performance is an expression and celebration of the interconnectedness of man and nature, the innate balance of human and spirit forces.
These performances are very entertaining and each of them have meaning. Enjoy.
Watching this musician sing while playing this instrument.
Close up picture of instrument and his explanation of what it was. It was too noisy for me to capture the name of the instrument.
And here he is again. We are right back where we started the evening, except we are at the end of what was a truly exciting and interactive evening.
This night would not be complete without the Jerusalem line dance. Click this link to see it. https://fb.watch/kqqSpQ2a9L/
Now it's time to catch the bus back to the hotel. This has been a long day and I've got to be rested for tomorrow. But this has been an incredible dining experience.
